How Phentermine works
Phentermine is a sympathomimetic (stimulant) medication. It’s not exactly known how the medication helps manage your weight. Phentermine is structurally similar to amphetamine (also a stimulant), which is thought to work by raising the levels of chemicals in your brain called norepinephrine and dopamine. These chemicals play a role in the reward system in your brain, which is involved in regulating your appetite.
What is Phentermine used for?
Short-term treatment for weight management in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of:
30 kg/m2 or greater; or
27 kg/m2 or greater with other risk factors (e.g., high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol)
